The pH scale

Understanding Contaminant Infiltration

The pH scale is a measure that indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a substance, including water. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral.

0 to 6 - Acidic

On the pH scale, values below 7 indicate acidity. The lower the number, the more acidic the substance. For example, a pH of 6 is mildly acidic, while a pH closer to 0 is highly acidic. Acidic solutions typically turn pH indicators, like litmus paper, red.

7 - Neutral

A pH of 7 is considered neutral, meaning it is neither acidic nor alkaline. Pure water typically has a neutral pH. At this point, pH indicators usually show a green or blue-green color.

8 to 14 - Alkaline

Values above 7 indicate alkalinity (basicity). A pH of 8 is slightly alkaline, whereas a pH closer to 14 is highly alkaline. Alkaline solutions turn pH indicators blue or purple. Hydrality’s water solutions are on this range.

The pH scale is logarithmic, which means each whole number step represents a tenfold change in acidity or alkalinity. For example, a substance with a pH of 5 is ten times more acidic than one with a pH of 6.

Understanding the pH scale is important in many aspects of life and science, including environmental monitoring, chemistry, medicine, and agriculture. In water treatment, maintaining the right pH level is crucial for ensuring the safety and palatability of drinking water and for the proper functioning of ecosystems and agricultural lands.

Water's pH level determines its acidity or alkalinity, which can significantly impact its suitability for various uses, not just drinking. In South Florida, where the water system encompasses a range of natural and urban environments, managing pH is vital for several reasons.

Healthier Skin and Hair

Water with a balanced pH level is gentler on the skin and hair. Alkaline water can help neutralize the skin's acidity, reducing dryness and irritation. Similarly, it can prevent the hair from becoming too dry or brittle, leaving it smoother and healthier.

Improved Digestion and Hydration

Drinking alkaline water can aid in digestion and promote better hydration. Alkaline water is believed to neutralize excess acid in the stomach, leading to improved digestion. Studies suggest that alkaline water is more hydrating than regular water.

Environmental Impact

Using balanced pH water can also have environmental benefits. It reduces the need for excessive use of cleaning agents and chemicals, which can have a positive impact on the environment by reducing chemical runoff and waste.
