Make a splash for a good cause! Join Miami Waterkeeper and Miami EcoAdventures on October 19, 2024, for a Kayak Clean-Up event at Historic Virginia Key Beach. This volunteer opportunity is a chance to enjoy Miami’s scenic waterways while helping to protect local marine habitats. The event runs from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, offering a meaningful way to give back to the community and make a tangible environmental impact.

Event Overview

Participants will embark on a two-hour kayaking journey through Miami’s coastal waters and surrounding mangrove habitats. The goal is to collect marine debris and remove waste that could otherwise harm wildlife and ecosystems. Volunteers will be paired up in double kayaks, making it a social and collaborative experience. If you’re RSVPing solo, you’ll be matched with another participant to share the kayak, so it’s also a great way to meet like-minded people.

Miami Waterkeeper will provide all necessary equipment, including kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices (PFDs). A Miami Waterkeeper staff guide will lead the group, ensuring that everyone is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful clean-up.

Why It Matters

Miami’s waterways are not just a beautiful feature of the city; they are vital to the health of the environment. Unfortunately, these waters are often polluted with debris, ranging from plastic bottles to fishing gear and other waste. This marine debris can significantly impact water quality, harm aquatic life, and disrupt ecosystems. Participating in clean-up efforts like this helps reduce the amount of trash in the ocean and prevent further damage to marine habitats.

The collected debris will also be documented, providing valuable data that can be used to track pollution trends and develop strategies to combat marine litter. These efforts help inform policies that aim to keep Miami’s waters clean and safe for everyone, from wildlife to local residents and tourists.

What to Expect on the Day

Volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00 AM for registration and orientation. The clean-up begins with a briefing on safety procedures and clean-up techniques, followed by an explanation of the day’s goals and the importance of the work being done. The clean-up itself involves navigating through designated areas, where participants will collect debris using the provided equipment.

After the kayaking portion, there will be an educational discussion on marine conservation. Topics will include the impact of pollution on marine life and how individuals can continue to contribute to ongoing efforts to protect local waterways. Miami Waterkeeper staff will share insights on broader conservation initiatives and how data collected during the clean-up helps inform policy and public awareness.

How to Prepare

  • Wear: Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunscreen are highly recommended for sun protection.

  • Bring: A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. While kayaking gear is provided, feel free to bring personal kayaking accessories if you prefer.

  • Safety Note: The event may require some physical effort, including lifting heavy items, so it is best suited for teenagers and adults with some kayaking experience. Children can participate but must be supervised by a guardian.

Community Service and Beyond

This event is not only an opportunity to engage in environmental conservation but also a chance to earn community service hours. It’s perfect for students or groups looking to make a positive impact while fulfilling service requirements.

How to Join

To participate, please RSVP in advance to secure your spot. If you have your own kayak or paddleboard and wish to use it, that’s also an option. In case of any difficulties with the RSVP process, or if you have specific needs, feel free to contact Erin at Miami Waterkeeper for assistance.

Event Location:The clean-up will take place at Historic Virginia Key Beach, a significant ecological and cultural site. Volunteers will meet at the designated location provided upon RSVP. As this is an outdoor event, please note that it is weather-dependent, and any changes will be communicated at least 24 hours in advance.
